I could not find a translation of The Gospel In Brief by the Maudes or by Richard Pevear and his wife Larissa Volokhonsky (currently working on a translation of War and Peace due to be released in 2008). Perhaps neither married couple bothered to translate this particular work. I read Tolstoy and Bernard Shaw were strong supporters of Aylmer and Louis Maude regarding their translations of Tolstoy's works which puts you in good company for your recommendation. May you Maria and anybody else who has read The Gospel In Brief add any commentary to Tolstoy's interpretation of Christ's teachings?nondisclosed_email@example.com (Ovader)Mon, 27 Nov 2006 07:42:54 +0000 Re: The Gospel in Brief - Leo Tolstoyhttps://bcinemaseekersforum.runboard.com/p156796,from=rss#post156796https://bcinemaseekersforum.runboard.com/p156796,from=rss#post156796The best translators of Tolstoy are the Mauds (they were a couple), who have been recommended by Nabokov. If their translations cannot be found, your next best bet is a duo of a native Russian and a native English-speaker (their last names should provide a clue). Opinions on whether Tolstoy made any revelatory discoveries in Christ's teachings which were contrary to what the Church promoted? I would also appreciate what English translator is best suited for Tolstoy's writings before I purchase this book.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Ovader)Sun, 26 Nov 2006 07:55:44 +0000
