Russia

What is the Cinemaseekers opinion of God's plan for Russia in the end times? We know this country plays a significant role in the sorry events that must come to pass.

So much is mentioned on this website with regards to Russian art, but do you have an opinion about Russia's greater destinty?

Re: Russia

What is Russia? Let us not fall into some kind of lacuna in which we take for granted this spatial designation, expanding and contracting with the gains and losses of military conquest. We talk about Russian art but what we really mean is certain Russians who perhaps because of (or in spite of) their nation's traditions have produced profound art. Tarkovsky eventually left Russia. Paradjanov was no Russian. Only Sokurov among the great directors is a commited nationalist.

Who knows what will happen to Russia, or America, or the UK. I for one feel like it is time that the state as an entity was transcended, and eventually got rid of. We can but dream.

Re: Russia

You cannot get rid of nationalism. Why would you want to. National identity is crucial for the human race. Without it we are lost and it cannot be engineered away as some would dearly love.

As for Russia, art is not meant to be created under adverse conditions, because that, as the crux of it, is what makes these artists, Spiritual hardship and oppression. I would go so far as saying that, and not just due to communism, Russians are quite possibly the most spiritually oppressed people on the planet.

I have to say I find Russia quite a bizarre country - an enigma wrapped in a riddle or however the saying went. I sense that something bad is coming from this country, quite soon, and that it will fulfill many prophecies.

Re: Russia

I don't want to fall into a trap of prophesying about Russia just because I myself am a Russian by birth. There's been so much written about the great Russian destiny (most notably by people like Dostoyevsky and Tolstoy), but who can really know for sure? One certainty is that God has a plan for every nation, but we, human beings, seem to specialize in thwarting His plans and replacing them with our own distortions. We know that many great as well as horrible things will come to pass in the End-Time, but I could not take it upon myself to predict the exact form they might take.

Personally, I don't find the Russians any more spiritually oppressed than any other people on this planet. Over the centuries, many of them (including even great artists) tended to have a superiority complex, when it came to spirituality. It seems to me that even Sokurov, at times, lapses into that mindset in his interviews - but I find any claim to Russian spiritual superiority to be totally unfounded.
