Russian Ark

A teacher of mine from Film School, who loves Tarkovsky, says that Sokurov's Russian Ark is "dull as dishwater", and "camera movement for camera movements sake" and I dearly want to prove him wrong, but I don't know how. I mean, it's a very spiritually cleansing experience, but he won't buy it. Anyone got any help?

Re: Russian Ark

In our experience, it is actually pointless to try to convince somebody else of the spiritual experience that you yourself have had. It just doesn't translate well to another person. One should simply be grateful for the experience and hope that other people would have this type of experience with something else.

Yeah, especially film teachers: they are the worst of all. Good luck anyway emoticon

Actually, this teacher happens to be very intelligent and gifted artist who has studied with Mike Leigh and Ulla Ryghe, so it disappoints me he can't connect with Russian Ark. I do not consider him to be a typical film teacher. But of course questers is correct: I cannot convince him of the power of the experience if it did not take him as it did me.
