"Lancelot of the Lake," "A Man Escaped" due on R1 DVD soon!

Finally, some Bresson titles are coming to DVD in North America. "Diary of a Country Priest" and "Les Dames du Bois de Boulogne" have been out for some time now, but now "Lancelot of the Lake,"

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0001Y4LEG/qid=1084276120/sr=1-2/ref=sr_1_2/104-6694564-2859153?v=glance&s=dvd

and "A Man Escaped,"

are said to be coming out on the 25th of May and can now be pre-ordered.

There is also coming out on R2 DVD "The Devil, Probably" (as well as some other Bresson films) in May by Artificial Eye, at least according to www.mastersofcinema.com, as I do not see this notice posted to Artificial Eye's website, and the titles aren't listed on Amazon.co.uk. As I understand it, there have been many delays already.

Here is a list of Bresson titles on DVD worldwide:

Take care,
Matthew

DVDbeaver.com has given their review of the New Yorker R1 "A Man Escaped" DVD, and it can be found here, with many captures from it:

It is a favorable one and judging from the pictures it looks like a very good transfer. This hopefully is a sign that the "Lancelot" transfer will be good as well.

Robert-Bresson.com reviews of the new R1 DVDs:

"Lancelot of the Lake":

"A Man Escaped":

http://www.acs.ucalgary.ca/~tstronds/robert-bresson.com/Words/ManEscapedNewYorker.html#DVD

The latter looks very good, but "Lancelot"'s DVD, according to this review and the images provided, could have been done better, unfortunately. Why did they have to crop the frame? Why does any DVD company ever do this? I never understand the logic behind such choices. It actually gives them more work, and is more costly, anyway.

I still eagerly await the "Lancelot" DVD, though, as it is one of my favorites.

And now DVDBeaver.com with their review of "Lancelot," concurring, they say, with mastersofcinema's review.

Watching the DVD of "Lancelot" now, perhaps it isn't so bad. Certainly it is preferable to the North American VHS by New Yorker. The sound is very nice (I can hear many things I never noticed before), and I'm not convinced the cropping is found in every shot, though some shots should indeed be fuller. The print and transfer look good, but not always great. The trailer included on it is an interesting watch - surely Bresson edited it himself. I've never seen a trailer quite like that before.
