Re: Artavazd Peleshian

I ordered them through the link on your website (http://www.neofashion.net/cinema/artavaz.html). Obviously they are not the Portugese version. I am very interested to know nonetheless what that disc is like, and it's a shame that you haven't been able to get through them.

I actually work at a film school in Sydney, Australia, (I am the librarian) and I showed all seven films at one of our weekly film screening classes. Alas, only four people showed up (!!!) but each of them found them amazing - in fact one showed up halfway through Seasons, and was blown away (as far as I can tell), the other near the end of Our Century, and was affected equally so. Having watched all these films through in one sitting, I myself felt I had gone through an absolute workout. Can you imagine the effect these films would have if they had proper distribution?

I love this forum because of the possibility I might be able to say some of my own thoughts regarding the matters that concerns this site, but as soon as I come to type it out, I suddenly find myself grasping at them, unable to put them down, even though I have seen them clearly in my mind. It amazes me how you seem always to be able to put down so clearly in your writings on particular films on this site, what it is that drives them and their creators.

Why don't you write about each film available on the DVDs of Peleshian's films? I know that really, one can't, because it is unsayable what he is expressing with the cinema. But what is the possibility?

Thanks so much for your kind words. Because of severe time constraints, it is highly unlikely we will be able to elaborate on our Peleshian page (as much as we would like to!) However, we whole-heartedly encourage you to try and convey your own impressions. The problem with forming the right words, whether it be in speech or in writing, is something we all face. Abd-ru-shin brilliantly addresses this problem and its solution in his lecture "The Human Word", which we have just made available on our site in an MP3-audio version beautifully read by Mr. Dawes from England. The link is http://www.cinemaseekers.com/THE_HUMAN_WORD.mp3. In the near future, the complete MP3-audio version of the book "In the Light of Truth: The Grail Message" will be available for order on our site. We will put a posting on the Cinemaseekers Forum, when it is ready.

They are bootleg copies of the original Portuguese DVD that Costo do Castelo [http://www.costacastelo.pt] produced as part of a series of DVDs for Porto's designation as Europe's City of Culture in 2001.

If you cannot get the official DVD through the www.pmelink.pt link you can also try here [https://www.blueplanetdvd.com/app/cliapp/ItemTitle/Info.tea?parId=3096], www.fnac.pt used to stock it also but it appears to be gone from their catalog now.

It is a shame these astounding films don't have a wider distribution and I'd love to see "Mountain Patrol", "Earth of the People" and the shorter version of "Our Century" but for now I'm just grateful to have come across the Costo do Castelo DVD a few years ago. It's one of my most cherished possessions.

There is also a beautiful hardback book which is well worth getting that was produced after an exhibition of Artavazd Pelechian's in Germany and Austria. Hundreds of stills are reproduced from "Inhabitants", "The Seasons" and "Our Century" along with several articles and interviews. You can get it from most good online booksellers, here is the link from Amazon: [http://amazon.com/o/ASIN/3936646600]

We have heard that the Portuguese Pelechian DVD is not remastered and not very good quality. Is this true? We have written to the people at http://www.artavazd-pelechian.net/, which is associated with http://www.cadrage.net, and asked them if they are planning to release their own Pelechian DVD. We will let you know any updates.

Yes, I would say that is correct. The Portuguese DVD is certainly not re-mastered.

It's hard for me to say since the DVD is the only format in which I've seen these films. The quality issue could largely be down to the footage itself. The footage that was filmed by Artavazd Pelechian himself looks good whereas some footage (which is probably archival and found footage) can look of a lesser quality.

As to whether the image quality could be improved, I don’t know, but since the films were done in 35mm I would imagine they could be improved upon. I’m more than happy with the Portuguese DVD in the absence of anything better.

Re: Artavazd Peleshian

I was the VGIK website and found a link which might prove to be very interesting, about Artavazd Peleshian:

http://www.vgik-edu.ru/index.php?nid=2672

It is in Russian, and I tried to do a translation via world.altavista.com, but it didn't quite seem to make sense - does anyone speak adequate Russian to make it out for us?

Thank you for posting a very interesting link on Peleshian. It contains the latest information on his work, as of October 11, 2005. While giving a master class at VGIK, Peleshian said that he is finishing work on his new 30-minute documentary film, which was co-produced by France and Germany, and hopes to show it at VGIK in the near future. He did not disclose the title of the film. At this master class, he showed a few of his films and talked about them.

A new Pelechian film! This is fantastic news. It sounds like it could be "Homo Sapiens". I'm giddy with excitement. Hopefully it will lead to a re-discovery of his work by a wider audience.
