Artavazd Peleshian

Can anybody tell me how to obtain these films for UK Pal video format or DVD. Iv'e searched Google for ages and can't find anything on Peleshian, let alone his films. He was actually the one director who I had never heard of until I came across this site.

Re: Artavazd Peleshian

It is not surprising that you haven't been able to find Peleshian's films. He has not had an official release anywhere, not even in his native Armenia. A few years ago we contacted the head of Yerevan Studio in Armenia Mr. Tigran Xmalian and he agreed to make us PAL VHS copies of 35mm masters for over $200. For us, it was imperative to see Peleshian's films, so we took up the offer and received 2 1/2 hours-worth of Peleshian's short films. The quality of the transfer was very poor, in addition to which we had to pay to convert the PAL tapes to NTSC (since we live in the U.S.). It was all worth it, though, because of the films themselves, which enabled us to at least give some exposure on the web to this incredible artist. Later on, when we tried to contact Yerevan Studio again, we received no reply. Their email: [email protected]

Speaking of Armenia, the website for the Sergei Parajanov Museum in Yerevan is at http://moon.yerphi.am/%7Eparm/conten_e.htm

Well then, what are we waiting for? These are common goods for mankind now - lets put these films on the web so they can get the audience they deserve.

Re: Artavazd Peleshian

There is such a thing as copyright, especially since Peleshian is still living, and it is only right that he should make something off his films after all these years of almost total obscurity. His films were sold to us under the condition that we would give him some free publicity (which we have done) and that we would not resell them to anybody else. The first thing his films deserve is a decent transfer (which was not the case for us), so that people can have a good-quality copy. Fortunately, one of his films has now had an official release - for specific information refer to "Peleshian Video Update" on this board.

Re: Artavazd Peleshian

I recieved the two discs of Peleshian's films available from this website. I think they are amazing films, and I am glad I discovered him through this site.

What I want to know is how did you get in contact with the film studio in Armenia? I want to contact Mosfilm about getting a copy of a few obscure Russian films but I seem to be ignored.

Re: Artavazd Peleshian

We tried to order the Peleshian DVDs from the Portugal site, but they wanted some kind of membership number in order to register. How were you able to place your order?

Concerning Armenfilm Studio in Armenia, we found it very difficult dealing with them: unanswered emails, etc.
