Peleshian Video Update (link update)

Peleshian's best short film, "The Seasons", has been released in Denmark through the Danish Film Institute on VHS (PAL). The Danish translation of the title is "Årstiderne". This is the general link to the site, where it can be purchased: http://eshop.dfi.dk
(Click on "Titles on VHS and DVD". The direct link to this film keeps changing because new releases are being added all the time.)

Thanks for this news.

I recommend the recently released Pasolini R1 DVD collections (currently two volumes) by Water Bearer films. The following are included in them: Oedipus Rex, Porcile, Love Meetings, Accatone, The Hawks and the Sparrows, The Gospel According to Saint Matthew. I've only really checked the latter film, and it is a decent print and transfer, but not much better looking and sounding than the widescreen VHS copy I have. Unfortunately you really have to take these claims of restoration being done on old films in stride. But, beside that, I recommend them.

The American Pasolini DVD releases are horrible quality (but better than nothing)! Water Bearer did not even try to remaster these great films (a great dishonor!) Try instead the British "Gospel According to St. Matthew". Beautiful quality! You will need a player that can handle PAL and multi-regions (a MODIFIED JVC XV-S500 is a good one). Also, a PAL "Oedipus Rex" is being released next month in England. You can order these through Xploited Cinema ( http://www.xploitedcinema.com/search.asp?search=pasolini ). By the way, the Pasolini "Medea" DVD from Italy (available from Xploited) is absolutely stunning! And the recent PAL release of Enrico's "Spirit of the Beehive" is another winner! Happy hunting and gathering!

Damn, I see DVDBeaver has a review and comparison of the DVDs that I outright missed, too.

Mmm, this VHS copy I have is by Water Bearer Films, too, and features the same "Prints made available through the co-operation of the Pier Paolo Pasolini Foundation, Rome" note, similar box design, the same film synopsis, the same "freshly remastered version" claim, etc.

The screen capture comparisons shown here of the three DVD editions: http://207.136.67.23/film/dvdcompare/gospelcompare.htm show that the Tartan R2 version does seem to have slight cropping on the top and bottom which the other editions do not have. Perhaps this is due to a different print being used, I don't know, and I can't tell whether the croppings hurt the image, which indeed does look better than the other editions otherwise (except that I wonder if the original print is meant to look that clean, that absent of film grain?). Why DVD companies cannot seem to get this straight when the entire negative is intended to be seen except where noted by the filmmakers (and I'm assuming that isn't the case here), I don't know. It's like when you take your 35mm film to these instant developers like Kodak, Wolf and others - you come back to find your prints automatically cropped by an artificially intelligent machine program or cropped using the quick judgments of whoever it is they've hired there that week. It's really quite hard to find a decent developer in many parts of the U.S. now that you can trust to not do this sort of thing to you. I truly dislike this.

Wow, Koyaanisqatsi DOES look better in 1.33. I had only seen it at 1.85.

http://207.136.67.23/film/DVDCompare2/koyaanisqatsi.htm

I wonder how many DVD companies would put more money and effort into the quality of the image and sound of the actual movie if there were less demand and expectations made for the extras?

I highly recommend the filmdebut "Japòn" by Mexican director Carlos Reygadas. You can buy it on DVD at http://www.amazon.co.uk

Also look out for the first film by Russian director Andrei Zvyagintsev called "The Return". It won the Golden Lion at the Venice Filmfestival and will probably come out soon in cinema's.

Here is a link to a highly critical review of "Japon", which we happen to agree with:

Who cares if the actors are wooden, look in the camera? The music from Bach is used in Offret? That the camerawork is not always right? That there are obvious influences from Tarkovsky? Oké, Reygadas is no genius, but for me this film worked. I thought it was beautifull, it has it charmes, and yes this film had an emotional impact on me even long after the film had ended. Not many films can achieve that on me. I remember the last one was “Mother and son” by Sokurov. But I also understand why people dislike this film. But what a boring world it would be if we all had the same taste and same opinion. Japon has become one of my personal favourites. I’m really looking forward to Reygadas next film: “Battle in Heaven.”

Chris.
